servair has been working for several years to reduce its carbon footprint by seeking an innovative solution in order to replace dry ice while respecting the cold chain required for on-board trays.
What is dry ice? And why look for an alternative to dry ice?
Dry ice is used to keep our products cold during transfers between our production units and aircraft, and also on-board aircraft not equipped with an air chiller.
The dry ice is placed in the trolleys, thus safe-guarding the cold chain. This effective solution also has a carbon impact: dry ice is solid CO2. Therefore, our aim was to find a substitute for dry ice that had the same properties, while having a lower carbon footprint.
What alternative was found?
The gel pack, a product composed of 96% water, contains no toxic products, is reusable, thus ideal for the catering industry and our activities.
What would be the ecological impact of the gel pack?
The gel pack significantly reduces our environmental impact. For one tonne produced and delivered, this solution emits around 47 kilos of CO2, whereas for one tonne of dry ice, we emit 1,280 kilos of CO2. The carbon footprint is thus greatly reduced.
This innovation has been validated by our main customer and is now being deployed across their entire network.
